WORKING TOGETHER THROUGH ADVOCACY
What does advocacy mean?
An advocate is someone who supports and speaks in favour of a cause or a policy. They passionately promote the interests of a cause or group. As an advocate and a professional association, the Canadian Home Builders Association – Edmonton Region (CHBA-ER) works on behalf of the industry and our members with local, provincial, and national governments. We discuss issues and solutions we see affecting our industry with the right level of governments.
Advocacy works best when decision-makers, such as City Administration or elected officials, are engaged and working with industry leaders and experts. Governments work better when we get involved. Regular engagement with policy and decision-makers is the responsibility of all of us in the residential construction industry.
What has worked for us?
Our relationship with the City of Edmonton, and the surrounding municipalities, is due to many years of working together on complex issues to create solutions that work for residents. Our members and the municipalities we work with all have the home owners in mind, so it is only natural we work together to create the best communities.
And our good relationship did not happen by chance – we worked at it for many years. We have become allies with city planners and administration when it comes to our industry. By fostering positive relationships with City Administration and elected officials, we are able to have rich conversations about challenges and solutions.
What the CHBA-ER does
The CHBA, at all levels, works with our members to advocate on specific policy or proposals that can affect the day-to-day business of our members.
Policy changes, Municipal Government Act updates, local bylaws, building codes, land use zoning changes, and so many other items governments make decisions on effect on our daily business. It’s easy to complain about changes or ways we could be doing things better, but did you know the CHBA-ER actively works with our members and our local governments to influence change for our industry?
Residential Housing and Construction are complex, but vital, components to building a vibrant and livable city. In the region, the CHBA-ER is the trusted “go-to” resource for municipalities when it comes to home building and renovating.
As the Association, we are often called upon when new policy or initiatives are under consideration. We, our members and staff collectively, are the experts in the Edmonton Region for home building industry. Our expertise and opinions are valued by decision-makers.
Your knowledge matters. Share your ideas, concerns, experiences, and perspective. You voice is vital to advance our industry. How can you participate? How can you add your voice to these concerns? Join one of our committees! Our Building Technical Committee, Renovator Committee, and Government Relations Committee meet monthly and discuss concerns and solutions to present to municipalities in the Edmonton Region.
Advocacy matters. It matters to our work at the CHBA-ER, to others in the industry in the Edmonton Region, and it matters for your bottom line.
